LESSON 18

Futuro do presente

This is the correspondent to Future Will in English. Again, in Portuguese, there is no need to use any auxiliary whatsoever. Therefore, the ending of the conjugated verb defines the verb tense, just as with the verb tenses we’ve studied before.

In Portuguese, it is also possible to say that you are going to do something, by using the verb IR + another verb. However, this lesson focuses only on the WILL future.

WATCH OUT: Although we have two similar ways of expressing the future in indicative tenses, Portuguese holds no differences in meaning as it does in English. The future with the verb IR is more informal and a lot used in spoken language.

SER
be

ESTAR
Be

TER
To have

Eu SEREI ESTAREI TEREI
Você SERÁ ESTARÁ TERÁ
Ele SERÁ ESTARÁ TERÁ
Ela SERÁ ESTARÁ TERÁ
A gente SERÁ ESTARÁ TERÁ
Nós SEREMOS ESTAREMOS TEREMOS
Vocês SERÃO ESTARÃO TERÃO
Eles SERÃO ESTARÃO TERÃO
Elas SERÃO ESTARÃO TERÃO

Remember that SER and ESTAR are main verbs, just like in English, and they are also irregular verbs. Check the spelling of these verbs and you will see they differ from that of their infinitive forms, their roots. Same thing happens with the verb TER.
